Professional development fund applications open to staff

Applications are open for unclassified staff to receive funds for professional development. The money can be used to present at a conference, implement a research project, attend a workshop or undertake a special project. The funds are made available by Unclassified Senate, with the assistance from Human Resources and Equal Opportunity. Awards of up to $500 were distributed to individuals during the fall semester, and several more are available this spring. Staff members interested in receiving the funding must electronically submit an application. The deadline is Jan. 31 for travel between March 1 and June 30. To apply, visit unclassifiedsenate.ku.edu.

Hospital Authority Board gives $1 million for cancer designation

The KU Hospital Authority Board has given formal approval for its annual $1 million contribution to the effort to achieve National Cancer Institute designation.

The KU Medical Center will formally request National Cancer Institute designation in September. NCI designation will bring early clinical trials to the region and make the university eligible for research projects open only to NCI centers. The designation also has historically brought high-tech business development to areas with NCI designated centers.

The hospital pledged the annual contribution in the 2008 affiliation agreement between the hospital, the KU Medical Center and KU Physicians.

Chancellor’s Student Awards Committee seeks nominations

The Chancellor’s Student Awards Committee is asking KU faculty and staff to identify outstanding students for the 2011 Chancellor’s Student Awards.

The awards are among the most prestigious awards presented at KU. Recipients are recognized during a surprise in-class presentation, and their photos are included in the Commencement program. The awards are designated for graduating seniors, with the exception of the Rusty Leffel Concerned Student Award, which can be presented to any student.

The online nomination form and award criteria are available at www.vpss.ku.edu/awards. Each nominee will be informed of his or her nomination and asked to provide a résumé and a statement of interest. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Feb. 11.
