Employees of the month

Sherilyn LaDuke

January Unclassified Employee of the Month

Sherilyn LaDuke

Started at KU: 1981

Current title: Assistant director, Life Span Institute

What that means: LaDuke is responsible for submitting all time and leave data for the more than 300 employees at the 15 centers under the Life Span Institute umbrella. She manages the hiring process, including overseeing a dozen program assistants who initiate appointments for the various centers and handling the hiring of student hourly staff. She also develops and disseminates personnel and payroll policies and assures compliance with university regulations. Sherilyn is the institute’s liaison with Human Resources/Equal Opportunity and payroll offices and also works with the KU Center for Research and the University Career Center.

Notable: The varied work and grants of many of the institute staff require multiple appointments during a fiscal year, and LaDuke manages all of them with organized accuracy. Deadlines are a constant in her work life, and she meets them with competency. She brings reliable professionalism to the often-sensitive arena of human resources.

Wendy Bridges

Wendy Bridges

January University Support Staff Employee of the Month

Started at KU: 2005

Current title: Administrative associate senior, Office of the Chancellor

What that means: Bridges serves the chancellor’s office and the university in a variety of support roles, including helping to produce Commencement each year. She also is responsible for arrangements for international guests to KU. Bridges arranges development trips and entertaining by Jeff Weinberg, assistant to the chancellor, that support the chancellor’s international outreach, and for groundbreakings or dedications hosted by the chancellor. In addition, she functions as a liaison to KU Endowment staff and does exemplary general office work such as phone coverage, greeting visitors, scheduling, correspondence and records management.

Notable: In 2010, Bridges played a fundamental role in the multi-faceted inauguration weekend for Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. Because the previous chancellor served for 14 years, it was not a case of simply doing what had been done before, and she ably assisted Charlie Persinger, director of university events by staffing the registration tables and much more.

Quotable: A colleague who interacts frequently with Bridges commented that “she is not content with simply getting it done, but in getting it done right.” More than one person who nominated her emphasized that Bridges exemplifies “a true professional” who “is willing to go the extra mile.”
