Marc Greenberg, chair of Slavic languages and literatures, gave the lecture, “The Meaning of South Slavic Dialectology,” at the opening of the 6th Congress of Dialectology and Geolinguistics Sept. 14. The event was held at the University of Maribor, Slovenia, and hosted about 100 dialectologists from Asia, North America and Europe.

Donna Ginther, professor of economics, gave a presentation at the Diversity in Academic Biomedicine: An Evaluation of Education and Career Outcomes seminar at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
Barbara Barnett, associate dean of journalism, has an article titled “Emma Says: A case study of the use of comics for health education among women in the AIDS heartland” featured in the current KU Libraries exhibit “Reach Out: Scholarly and visual communication to promote AIDS awareness.” The exhibition is on view in Watson Library's Library Gallery through Nov. 10. Barnett's article originally was published in Feminist Media Studies.
Susanne Shaw, professor of journalism, spoke to faculty, students and university administrators last week at Tsinghua University in Beijing on U.S. journalism and mass communication education and accreditation.
Jimmy Gentry, professor of journalism, will team with two-time Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Jim Steele to present a day-long workshop on “Investigative Business Journalism” Oct. 21 in Los Angeles. Gentry will discuss “Rethinking Financial Statements in Today’s Environment.”
Laura Moriarty, assistant professor of English, was part of a panel discussion with novelists Curtis Sittenfeld and Stewart O’Nan during The Big Read Oct. 10 in St. Louis, Mo.
John Tidwell, professor of English, gave the invited lecture, “Sterling A. Brown and the Slave Narratives,” for the Soul of a People Series at the Public Library, St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 23. He also lectured for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History Oct. 2 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His presentation was titled, “Regenerating the Art and Life of Sterling A. Brown.”
Rich Simpson, professor of special education, has published the fourth edition of “Working with Parents and Families of Exceptional Children and Youth: Techniques for Successful Conferencing and Collaboration.” Simpson is part of the faculty at the Edwards Campus. The textbook is designed to help educators and professionals who work with families of special needs kids, which Simpson says is estimated at one in 10 school-age children.
