THE PRESSURE OF PASSAGE: Marcia Nielsen, associate director for public policy at the KU Medical Center’s Institute for Community and Public Health, was quoted in a recent story in the Kansas City Star and American Chronicle about what the passage of a health care reform bill by Congress means. "It keeps the focus and momentum on reform and puts pressure on the Senate to craft a bill and get it up for a vote before the end of the year," Nielsen said.

DREDGING POTTER: Mark Jakubauskas, associate research professor with the Kansas Biological Survey, was quoted in a recent Wichita Eagle story about efforts to revive Potter Lake. Faculty, staff, students and volunteers recently took samples from the lake’s floor. They found enough silt to fill about 600 dump trucks. "That's an awful lot of silt, considering we have a fairly small watershed here," Jakubauskas said.

RESEARCH INSECURITY: Lisa Wolf-Wendel, professor of educational leadership and policy studies, was quoted in a recent Inside Higher Ed article about attitudes regarding research into higher education. Researchers in the field are pushing for more attention and influence with policy makers. Wolf-Wendel shared the story of a reaction she got when entering the job market and an inerviewer asked her why she got a degree in higher education. “His implication was that I should have gotten a degree in a real discipline," she said.
