AMERICAN AFTERLIFE: Jonathan Mayhew, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese, examines how perceptions of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca have changed since his death in the book “Apocryphal Lorca: Translation, Parody, Kitsch.” Mayhew explores how, after Lorca’s death, English translation has transitioned him to a specifically American poet. Through translations, he has become more suited to American culture and ideology, Mayhew writes. He goes on to explore uses and abuses of translation, poetry and Lorca himself.
