Adrian L. Melott, professor of physics and astronomy, published “Late Ordovician geographic patterns of extinction compared with simulations of astrophysical ionizing radiation damage” in the March 25 edition of the journal Paleobiology. It was co-authored by Brian Thomas, assistant professor of physics at Washburn University, who earned a doctorate from KU. Melott also contributed an article to SEED magazine titled “The Extinction Oscillator” for the June 2009 edition. The article explores whether there is a regular cycle of creation and destruction of Earth’s biodiversity.

Peter Grund, assistant professor of English, co-edited “Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt,” the first comprehensive record of all legal documents pertaining to the Salem witch trials. The book can be read as a reference or as an unfolding narrative.

Marc L. Greenberg, chair and professor of Slavic languages and literatures, gave the 12th annual Kenneth E. Naylor Memorial Lecture in South Slavic Linguistics on May 18 at Ohio State University. "The Line, The Which, and the War Trope" lecture concerned how knowledge of language could and could not be used to learn about prehistory and developing ethnicities.

Tami Albin, undergraduate instruction and outreach librarian, facilitated a roundtable discussion called “Queer Public Histories: Challenges and Successes in Creating LGBTQ Archives and History Projects” during the National Council on Public History held April 2-5 in Providence, R.I.

Carmen Orth-Alfie, coordinator of government information services, presented a poster titled “Copyright and Fair Use: Landmarks and Guidelines for the Art Information Provider” at the Art Libraries Society of North America Annual 2009 Conference held April 18 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Lorraine J. Haricombe, dean of libraries, and Rebecca Smith, director of communications and advancement for KU Libraries, presented “Engaging your own alumni base: Development strategies for former library student employees” during the Academic Library Advancement and Development Network held April 27 in Williamsburg, Va.

Barbara Barnett, assistant professor of journalism, is the interim associate dean for undergraduate studies in journalism. David Guth, associate professor, will step down from the position July 1 but will continue teaching and research duties at the school.

Tien-Tsung Lee, associate professor of journalism, has published “Media, Politics and Asian Americans,” co-authored with H. Denis Wu of Boston University, and "The Common Grounds and Grand Canyons between Liberals and Conservatives - A Life Style Analysis," co-authored with former KU graduate student Chris Brott.

Phil Baringer, professor of physics and astronomy, spoke about the Large Hadron Collider March 11 at the Hays Science Café, following a lecture at Fort Hays State University. The monthly café event is held at a downtown coffee shop and is sponsored by Kansas Citizens for Science and the Fort Hays State Science and Mathematics Education Institute.

Gisela Dreschhoff, adjunct associate professor of geology, presented a poster on Galactic Cosmic Rays, Ocean Conveyor Belt, Regional Climate and Polar Temperatures at the Space Climate Symposium III March 18-22 in northern Finland.

Steve Hawley, professor and associate chair of physics and astronomy, recently gave the 2009 John Schopp Memorial Lecture at San Diego State University. He also gave a public lecture as part of the KU Natural History Museum’s “Wild Science” series, visited middle schools in northeastern Kansas to talk about science and did several media events regarding the recent NASA mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope.
