Nicholas Willems

Nicholas Willems, 85, died July 15. He was a professor of civil engineering at KU for 30 years and received his doctorate in civil engineering from KU in 1963. He authored several engineering books and was chair of the department for one term. He retired in 1990. Survivors include three sons, two daughters, one sister, 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to Mustard Seed Church Alpha Course, in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Norma Jean Huhs Larson

Norma Jean Huhs Larson, 73, died July 15. She worked as an account clerk in the biological sciences department at KU, retiring in 2001 after 25 years. Survivors include two sisters, her stepfather and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to the Norma J. Huhs Larson Memorial Fund, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, KS 66066.

W. John O’Brien

W. John O’Brien, 66, died Aug. 15. He was a professor of biology from 1971 to 2001 and a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology from 1982 to 2000. His research focused on the aquatic ecology of arctic lakes. Survivors include his wife, a son, two daughters and a grandson. The family suggests memorials to the UNCG Excellence Foundation, on behalf of the W. John O’Brien Award for Ecological Field Research, sent in care of Judy Piper, UNCG Development, P.O. Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170.

Jack Williams Brehm

Jack Williams Brehm, 81, died Aug. 9. He was a professor of psychology at KU from 1975 until his retirement in 1996. He authored several books on social psychology, including “The Intensity of Emotion” in 1999. Brehm is survived by a brother and two nieces.
