Missouri state Rep. Lloyd Daniel, D-Kansas City, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union.
His topic is "Liberation Education: A Strategy for the 21st Century." Daniel, whose career combines education and public service, has written three books, most recently Liberation Education: A Strategy for the 21st Century, published by New Democracy Press.
"Education should be more than training. Training domesticates. Real education liberates," Daniel said in a recent telephone interview.
A graduate of Paseo High School, Kansas City, Mo., Daniel earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1975 from KU and a master's degree in education theory in 1978 from the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
Daniel is vice chair of the Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.
He also serves on House committees for Appropriations, Natural and Economic Resources, Social Services, Medicaid and the Elderly and for Ways and Means. Daniel has taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, at Penn Valley Community College, Kansas City, Mo., and in the National In-Service Teacher Education Program of Grenada.
He has served as a host on KCPT-TV and community radio programs.
His early career included working as a community development specialist and teacher with Genesis Alternative School and serving as director for the Urban Economic Development Institute, both in Kansas City, Mo.
Daniel's lecture is sponsored by KU's Black Student Union and the KU Student Senate as part of the university's observance of African-American History month.
