KU graduate and U.S. astronaut Steven Hawley will join Daniel S. Goldin, administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, when he visits KU on Friday, Feb. 20.
Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., is hosting Goldin's trip to Kansas.
Goldin will speak on "The Future of Space Exploration" at 7 p.m. in Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union. Hawley will also address the audience. The event is free and open to the public.
Hawley was selected as an astronaut in 1978 and is a veteran of four space flights, including the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery. He has logged more than 650 hours in space and was a mission specialist during a five-day mission to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990.
Hawley graduated from Salina Central High School in 1969. He received a bachelor of arts degree in physics and astronomy, graduating with highest distinction, from KU in 1973 and a doctoral degree in the philosophy of astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1977.
Earlier in the day, Hawley will join Brownback and Goldin at an appearance at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.
While at KU, Goldin and Hawley will address the public after meeting with university officials and KU researchers involved in NASA projects.
