Concert Band to perform

The first performance of the year by the 70-piece KU Concert Band is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Lied Center.

James C. Barnes, associate professor of music theory and composition and associate director of bands, is conductor of the Concert Band, assisted by Stuart Benkert, Lawrence graduate student.

Among the works on the Concert Band program is Barnes' new composition, "Inspiration Point: A Portrait of Tower Falls at Yellowstone." The composer, who visited Tower Falls at Yellowstone Park in Wyoming two years ago, said the music expressed the awesome power of this natural phenomenon.

"This is outdoor music, music to take your breath away," he said. "It is intended to depict the vastness of the beautiful canyon, the gush of the waterfall and the seemingly endless blue sky at Inspiration Point."

Tickets, on sale at the KU box offices, are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens.
