Jayhawk mascot turns 50
Fifty years ago, Harold "Hal" Sandy created the Jayhawk image that is still in use. On Sept. 12, Sandy was honored with a parade, gifts and cake. The event was planned to mark the 50th birthday of Sandy's drawing of the Jayhawk and the 50th anniversary of the KU bookstore. Sandy had sold the copyright to his drawing of the Jayhawk to the bookstore for $250 right after he graduated from KU.
