Chancellor fills in more of the organizational chart

Chancellor Robert Hemenway filled in some of the blanks in his campuswide reorganization plan to make KU more efficient and student centered.

In a March 7 letter to all faculty and staff members, Hemenway named people who will fill key positions in an administrative structure effective July 1.

Not all offices and individuals were identified. KU is conducting a search for a provost, the chief operating officer for the Lawrence campus, and many decisions about other offices have not been made, Hemenway said.

"I believe in the importance of communicating decisions that affect the university's faculty and staff as they are made," Hemenway said. "It is my hope that by sharing this information that those identified can now be included in the process of implementing the organizational change."

In January, Hemenway announced a new organizational structure for the university. Since then, an implementation team has worked with him to select people who will carry out many of the jobs he identified.

Throughout the fall semester, a 20-member team of faculty, staff and students advised Hemenway about changing KU's more-than-20-year-old organizational structure. Hemenway announced as priorities streamlining the administration, improving KU's use of technology, making the university more student centered and clearly defining individual job responsibilities.

In the reorganization, a position of vice chancellor for information services and dean of libraries was created. William J. Crowe, currently KU's dean of libraries, will hold that position. Computing services, Printing Services and Networking and Telecommunication Services, in addition to the libraries, will report to him. Crowe will report to the provost.

Hemenway said he had asked Mossberg to serve as an interim vice chancellor for research from July 1 until a new vice chancellor is selected after a national search. The search will begin after a provost is selected. Mossberg has agreed to serve in this position until July 1, 1997, if necessary, and will continue to chair a committee investigating the possibility of a research foundation for KU.

Offices such as the centers and institutes and the Kansas Geological Survey and Kansas Biological Survey will continue to report to the vice chancellor for research. The current reporting structure for the KU museums will continue.

Reporting directly to the chancellor's office will be the following:

Mary Burg, executive assistant and chief of staff; Robert Edwin Frederick, director of athletics; Victoria Thomas, general counsel; Richard L. Mann, university director of administration; Deborah J. Teeter, university director of institutional research; Tom Hutton, director of university relations; Marlin Rein, university director of budget and governmental relations. Burg served in a similar position for Hemenway at the University of Kentucky. She will join the staff April 15. KANU-FM, the university's public radio station, also will report to the Office of the Chancellor.
