Steve Leisring, assistant professor of trumpet, was featured as a guest artist at the International Trumpet Week and Conference held April 3-7 at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. Following the conference, Leisring was also a guest at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China.
H. George Frederickson, distinguished professor of public administration, gave a series of lectures on ethics in government at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. He also lectured at the School of Public Administration at Remnin University in Beijing, China.
Mary Zimmerman, professor of sociology and heath and policy management, delivered the keynote address, "Comparative Perspectives on Gender, Health Care Work and Social Citizenship Rights," at an international conference held April 25 at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. She was also the Lansdowne Visiting Lecturer for the University's sociology department April 25-28. Additionally, her book, Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework, co-authored with Jacquelyn S. Litt of the University of Missouri-Columbia and Christine E. Bose of the State University of New York-Albany, was recently published.
Norm Slade, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and senior curator of the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Center, has received the 2006 CLAS Career Achievement Teaching Award.
Joseph Heppert, chair of the chemistry department, testified May 3 before the House Committee on Science in Washington, D.C. He urged the committee to work with the National Science Foundation to address the growing shortage of students in the math and science fields.
