James Helyar, a senior librarian at Spencer Research Library, was hit by a car on his way to work Feb. 23. Helyar was in the crosswalk on Memorial Drive, immediately east of the Campanile, said Capt. Schuyler Bailey of the Public Safety Office.

He was taken by air ambulance from the Memorial Stadium parking lot to KU Hospital. Hospital personnel were not able to provide an update on his condition because of federal privacy regulations.

Helyar, 74, was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by 25-year-old Thomas Ryan, a staff member in the academic technology services department. Ryan said he was unable to see Helyar because the sun was in his eyes.

Helyar came to KU from England on special appointment in 1955. He returned permanently in 1960 and has held a number of positions since then.
