STATE WART: Ted Frederickson, professor of journalism, wrote an editorial piece for the Feb. 5 Wichita Eagle addressing proposed legislation that would move protesters a certain distance from funerals.

The legislation is in response to Topeka Pastor Fred Phelps, who has protested at funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, claiming their deaths are punishment from God for the United States accepting homosexuality.

He suggested that, instead of passing legislation preventing him from delivering his message, the legislture should designate Phelps the state wart.

"The best state response to Fred Phelps is not censorship of his message. Rather, the state through its representatives should send a clear message that shadows this man wherever he goes," Frederickson wrote.
