SPEAKING OUT: A column by John Merrow in the Dec. 21 issue of The Christian Science Monitor mentioned that Chancellor Robert Hemenway was one of only three American college presidents to speak out about the intelligent design/evolution controversy.

It noted a memo he sent to university employees stating his support of teaching evolution.

"Speaking out, even by letter, was an act of certain courage in Kansas, where the state board of education has mandated including intelligent design in its science curriculum," Merrow wrote.

Cornell University and the University of Idaho's presidents also spoke out on the topic.
