TUNNEL TIPS: Don Steeples, distinguished professor of geophysics, was quoted recently in an Associated Press article about the advantages of human intelligence over technology in discovering drug smuggling tunnels.
"It's a needle-in-a-haystack problem," Steeples said. "In this case, we don't even know where the haystack is." The longest tunnel ever found along the U.S.-Mexican border was recently discovered following a tip.
A Mexican man was arrested in connection with the 2,400-foot tunnel, which went as deep as 90 feet and was about 5 feet high and 5 feet wide.
Technology often yields false alarms, the article states.
