Willmott's 'C.S.A.' plays in New York, various cities
"CSA: The Confederate States of America," a satirical movie by University of Kansas film professors that examines life after the South wins the Civil War, premiered in New York City on Feb. 15, and will premiere Feb. 24, in Boston, Chicago, three California cities and Kansas City, Mo.
Kevin Willmott wrote and directed "CSA," and Matt Jacobson was cinematographer. Both are assistant professors of theatre and film at KU. The producer was Rick Cowan of Kansas City, Mo., who worked with Willmott on his award-winning 1998 movie, "Ninth Street."
IFC Films and Spike Lee will release "CSA" in 19 cities during February and March. In Lawrence, the film will open at Liberty Hall on March 10 and is scheduled to be shown in Salina on March 30.
Forums set to discuss classified research policy
University Governance has convened a classified research task force to debate both the current university policy on classified research, as well as revisions to the policy proposed in 2004/2005. Governance is welcoming input from the KU community at a series of open forums to discuss classified research.
The first forum will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Relays Room, third floor, Burge Union. The second will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Visitor's Center Auditorium in Templin Hall. A third will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Feb. 27 in the English Room of the Kansas Union. The last will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Pine Room of the Kansas Union.
German coordinator visits, discusses global awareness
An administrator from the University of Bonn, Germany, visited KU to learn about the Global Awareness Program (GAP).
Silke Bochow, project coordinator in Bonn's International Office, was on campus Feb. 13 and 14. The University of Bonn is implementing a program similar to GAP. Representatives from Bonn's International Office learned about GAP last summer during a presentation by Assistant Dean Hodgie Bricke. Bochow spoke with representatives from the Office of International Programs, Study Abroad, International Student and Scholar Services and students.
New CLAS dean receives two honors
Incoming College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Joseph Steinmetz was selected for the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award at Central Michigan University, his alma mater.
Steinmetz was also elevated to the rank of distinguished professor at Indiana University. The selection occurred shortly before he accepted the dean position at KU.
Mitchell prize given to South Carolina professor
The second William L. Mitchell Prize for Bibliography or Documentary Work on Early British Periodicals or Newspapers was recently presented to William Rivers, an English professor at the University of South Carolina.
The award honors William L. Mitchell, a former librarian at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library. He was curator of the Richmond P. and Marjorie N. Bond collection of 18th century British newspapers and periodicals and of the Edmund Curll Collection.
