In the spring of 1917, when KU men began leaving
KU to join the Kansas National Guard, to provide essential farm labor
or to gear up for on-campus
military training, KU women were gathering in Old Snow Hall to join the
local Red Cross chapter. From rolling bandages and learning basic first
aid to receiving more advanced training as nurses, many of the university’s
female students were eager to do their bit to support the American effort
in World War I. Source: This Week in KU History, www.kuhistory.com. University
