Thinking positively

Doug Koch/ University Relations

Susan Slothower, director of behavioral services at Winfield's Creative Community Living, works with Lissa Misasi, a first-grader in Winfield. A story about Slothower appeared in several south-central Kansas newspapers because of her work as a certified Positive Behavior Support facilitator and instructor for the Kansas Institute for Positive Behavior Support, which was established in 2001 through KU's Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies. Slothower was in the first class of professionals who acquired the additional certification through KIPBS three years ago. The institute, directed by Rachel Freeman, is building a network of professionals in small rural Kansas towns who can assess and help individuals with disabilities.
