Staff still work after presses stop

Printing Services’ former employees find new jobs

The presses may have stopped at Printing Services, but for almost all of the department’s former employees, work continues.

Marilu Goodyear, vice provost for information services, which oversees Printing Services, said all but three employees have found other work.

“ We were able to help 17 people find other employment on campus and elsewhere,” she said. “We felt it was important to support this group of people who had served the university.”

Of the three employees who haven’t moved to new jobs, one is eligible for retirement and two continue to work with Human Resources and Equal Opportunity to find appropriate positions. Two employees associated with Campus Mail will retain their current positions and have moved with that department as it continues as a division of Information Services. Four people are now working off campus, and 13 found other jobs with the university.

Lynn George, recruitment manager, and other HR/EO staff worked with employees on skills assessments, resume preparation and job applications.

“ We were charged with helping these valuable employees find suitable work,” George said. “It was a joy to see the vast majority placed so quickly.”

The closure was announced earlier this spring. Goodyear said the decision had been forced by changes in technology such as Web publishing, e-mail and color copying, which offered customers alternatives to traditional printing.

Services offered through the department have waned as employees found other employment. According to Goodyear, the office is expected to close completely by the end of the spring semester.
