CAPS director is interim dean of students
Frank DeSalvo, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, has
been named interim dean of students.
DeSalvo came to the university in 1991. He holds a doctorate in social
work from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree
in social work from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a bachelor’s
degree from St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa.
KUCR expands administrative staff
Kevin Boatright and Jeanne M. Rooney are assuming new roles at the KU
Center for Research.
Boatright, who has served as associate executive vice chancellor for
external affairs since 2002, has been named director of research communications.
He will assume the position May 2. Boatright will direct research communications
at the Lawrence campus, including the KUCR Web site and publications,
and planning initiatives and promotional, news and event activities.
 Jeanne M. Rooney, who comes to KU after five years with UMB Bank as vice
president and director for nonprofit financial and advisory services,
is assistant vice provost for research and director of finance for KUCR.
Her duties include developing a strategic financial plan for budgeting,
cash management, forecasting, debt financing, risk management and financial
analysis.
General counsel taps KU HIPAA coordinator
Lisa E. Hoebelheinrich will join the KU general counsel’s Lawrence
office May 16 as assistant general counsel. Hoebelheinrich has served
as HIPAA coordinator for KU since 2002. Hoebelheinrich holds a bachelor’s
degree in cultural anthropology from Johns Hopkins University and a law
degree from KU.
Ceremony honors geriatrics professor
Douglas Woolley, associate professor of family and community medicine
at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita, was formally vested April 15 with
the Delos V. Smith Jr. Fellowship in Community Geriatrics. The presentation
took place during the annual Family Medicine Spring Symposium.
Ron Gillam to join Life Span Institute
Ron Gillam, professor of communication sciences and disorders at the
University of Texas at Austin, will join the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing:
Sciences and Disorders as a full professor in summer 2006. Gillam also
will be a senior scientist with the Life Span Institute. He is currently
the principal investigator on a National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders clinical trials grant that compares the outcomes
of computer-assisted and clinician-directed language intervention programs.
Former MU staffer joins Continuing Ed
Jim Peters will join the School of Continuing Education as the director
of marketing and development on April 25. He wrote a best-selling book
on Arlington National Cemetery and has worked in publications and marketing
at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Journalism dean hires assistant
Cindy Vinyard began work April 7 as the new administrative assistant
to Ann Brill, dean of journalism. Vinyard held similar positions with
women’s basketball coaches Marian Washington from 1998 to 2004
and Bonnie Henrickson in 2004-05.
