Employee celebrates 50 years

Administrator began career as typist

Helen Carr, financial and enrollment services administrator for the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, will celebrate 50 years of employment with KU at a recognition ceremony on May 3.

As a 19-year-old Kansas City Kansas Community College student, Carr learned about an open position at KU from a professor. She began her employment with KU on Sept. 1, 1955, as a clerk typist in Continuing Education.

During her 50 years with KU, Carr has experienced many changes, including job titles, locations and technology.

She is the main enrollment contact for 2,000 students and 250 faculty and advisers each semester. She is dedicated to students, interacting with them on a daily basis to ensure that enrollment, fee payment and other related issues are in order.

Carr has never held a job outside of KU and said she is happiest with her current position because of the learning opportunities.

“ The variety of duties requires detailed work and concentration,” said Carr. “I stayed with KU because I was always learning new and challenging work that gave me the opportunity to broaden my learning skills.”
