CLAS sabbatical leave applications due


College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty who wish to apply for sabbatical leave for the 2005-06 academic year must submit an endorsed application to the College Office, 200 Strong Hall, by 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22. Self-nominations are due in the Office of the Provost by Wednesday, Sept. 15. Only applications submitted to the College Office by Sept. 22 will be forwarded to the Office of the Provost by Wednesday, Nov. 1.


KU holding sister-city breakfast


KU will hold a breakfast for Lawrence representatives and delegates from sister cities Eutin, Germany, and Hiratsuka, Japan, from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the Spencer Museum of Art. Chancellor Robert Hemenway will make a presentation that will be followed by a tour of library holdings. The breakfast is one of several events planned for the Eutin and Hiratsuka visitors during a trip Sept. 15-19 to celebrate Lawrence’s sesquicentennial.


Donation to create special education professorship


Atlanta residents Delbert and Barbara Ossian Williamson have pledged $250,000 to the KU Endowment Association to establish a professorship in special education. Their gift is expected to be matched by General Electric Co., to create a total fund of $500,000. The fund also will receive additional income from the Kansas Partnership for Faculty of Distinction. The professorship isthe second one the Williamson family has established.


State secretary on aging visits social welfare


The School of Social Welfare Office of Aging and Long Term Care recently welcomed Kansas Department on Aging Secretary Pamela Johnson-Betts; Sam Alvey, director of the program evaluation division; and Bob Parker, program evaluation specialist. Johnson-Betts visited the OALTC to share her vision and areas of interest with faculty and staff.


Monarch Watch open house, tagging set


Monarch Watch will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 in Foley Hall on KU’s west campus. The event will be open to the public. Monarch Watch and the Jayhawk Audubon Society will sponsor butterfly tagging for the public at the Baker Wetlands from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18. Visit www.MonarchWatch.org for details.


Wescoe dining area to reopen


Underground, the dining area formerly known as Wescoe Terrace, is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Michael Myers, assistant director of food services for the KU Memorial Unions, said the renovation took slightly longer than expected because infrastructure improvements were needed to support the new kitchen and additional 2,500 square feet of dining space.


Writing Center services expand


The KU Writing Center has expanded its service with tuition enhancement funding. The newest location, in Anschutz Library next to the coffee cart, will offer writers an additional location to talk with consultants. Hall Center to present new lecture series


The Hall Center for the Humanities is introducing the Academic Fictions Faculty Colloquium Lunchtime Talk Series. The series comprises seven Friday lectures this fall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Summerfield Room of the Adams Alumni Center. New Structural Biology Center to be dedicated


KU’s new Structural Biology Center will be dedicated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, on west campus. To celebrate the opening of the new building, the KU-NIH COBRE Center in Protein Structure and Function has organized a symposium after the dedication. Teaching Professorship nominations open


Nominations for the Chancellors Club Teaching Professorships, which recognize excellence in teaching with an annual stipend of $5,000 until retirement from KU, should be sent to the Office of the Provost, 250 Strong Hall, not later than Oct. 15. Forum to focus on terrorism preparedness


Being prepared for a terrorist event in the Kansas City area will be the topic of the next “Saturday Morning at KU Med” forum in Battenfeld Auditorium at the KUMC student center in Kansas City, Kan. Registration for “Terrorism: Are You Prepared for a Terrorist Event in Kansas City?” will begin at 7:30 a.m. The program is free, but participants are asked to register by calling (913) 588-1227.
