Flock to be feathered, new plumage revealed
The Feather the Flock campaign to raise $150,000 for new Marching Jayhawk
uniforms ended with a flurry Feb. 29, exceeding the goal by about $40,000.
KU band students expressed a collective “wow” when the prototype
of the new uniform was revealed.
The new uniform design offers a reversible overlay, a reversible cape,
and a jacket that stands alone. This gives the band a variety of looks
for performances in Memorial Stadium, recruiting trips, band day and other
activities.
As part of the design process—and in response to input from the
public—band directors continue to work with Fruhauf Uniforms Inc.
on modifications that will further accentuate KU crimson and blue.
“We were very happy with the initial design concept,” said
Steven K. Hedden, fine arts dean. “We are adjusting uniform aspects
that we think improve the overall design and that the public will be happy
to see.”
The drive for new uniforms is one link in a plan to strengthen the Marching
Jayhawks. Uniforms are viewed as an immediate need, while ongoing funding
to provide band member stipends is a long-term goal.
