Q: Who was the first Jayhawk in space?
A: The first KU alumnus in space was Commander Ron Evans, who graduated
with an engineering degree in 1955. Evans piloted the command module
on Apollo 17, which took him and two other astronauts on America’s
sixth and final 20th-century voyage to the moon. Although Evans did
not set foot on the lunar surface, he performed scientific experiments
and made an hourlong space walk
