Parking commission to conduct annual meeting
The Parking Commission will conduct its third annual open hearing from
3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Alderson Auditorium at the Kansas Union.
The hearing will be open to faculty, staff and students. The forum will
provide an opportunity for the university community to ask questions of
and express concerns to commission members about parking concerns across

Defense department official to present Cold War lecture
The Department of Russian and East European Studies is sponsoring a presentation
by Douglas M. Englund, U.S. Department of Defense. “Cold War Legacy,
New World Threats” will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the

Art professor receives award of excellence
Tanya Hartman, associate professor of art, received the first $1,000 TIAA-CREF
Excellence in Teaching Award at halftime during the Sept. 27 KU home football
game. Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Athletics Director Lew Perkins and TIAA-CREF
representative Lori McGeehon presented the award.
NSF awards grant for amphibian research
Linda Trueb, professor of biological sciences, and Rafe Brown, adjunct
research associate with the Natural History Museum and the Division of
Biological Sciences, recently received a National Science Foundation grant
for their research on amphibians. The KU portion of the multi-institutional
grant is approximately $237,000.
Native American program wins federal funding
The School of Social Welfare’s Native American Scholars Project
has received $350,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services. Alice Lieberman, associate professor of social welfare,
and Michelle Levy, program assistant for social welfare, will oversee
the program.
UPSA invites members to meeting, upcoming events
The Unclassified Professional Staff Association board and committees will
conduct a general UPSA meeting Nov. 25, where there will be an opportunity

Law school throws birthday party, welcomes dignitary
KU’s School of Law will celebrate its 125th birthday beginning at
12:30 p.m. today in Green Hall. On Monday, Nov. 10, Margaret Vonno, the
senior economic counselor at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington,
D.C., will present “A Conversation about the European Union”
to law school faculty from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by an informal
opportunity to meet with her from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Rice Room.
