Improvement projects may delay traffic, cause detours

Beginning May 19, immediately after commencement, construction on two
improvement projects will eliminate parking in one lot and reduce Jayhawk
Boulevard to one-way traffic periodically through Aug. 20.
The first project is phase II of the 2002 Waterline Rehabilitation Project,
which will replace 4,000 feet of water lines installed in the early 1900s
that are a secondary source of water for the university.
The project has been divided into six stages, four of which involve Jayhawk
Boulevard. The other two stages will include work on Sunflower Road and
on 13th Street.
During construction, traffic will be restricted to one-way. Detours for
traffic will be provided as necessary. Parking on the boulevard will be
removed temporarily during each stage of the project.
The second project scheduled this summer will improve parts of the university’s
tunnel system by replacing deteriorated concrete wall and ceiling sections,
installing a waterproof membrane over the tunnel, creating a drainage
system and updating pipe supports and lighting.
This summer’s phase of tunnel construction will be in an area between
the Dole Human Development Center and the northwest entrance of Haworth
Hall.
Excavation on the project is expected to affect parking in lots near Malott,
Dole and Haworth. Deliveries and emergency access will be maintained at
all times during construction. Parking in lot 37 will be restricted. Handicap
stalls will be retained, but reserved stalls and regular permit holders
will be rerouted to other lots.
