University Relations seeks updated phonebook listings
The Office of University Relations is gathering information for the annual update of the front sections of the university telephone directory, pages 1 to 47. This does not include information for the faculty and staff section (blue-bordered pages in the current directory). Letters requesting updates have been sent to all departments. If you have any questions, please call Antoinette Smith at 864-8856.

History professor wins $20,000 fellowship
Jeffrey P. Moran, associate professor of history at KU, has won one of 13 Howard Foundation fellowships for the 2003-04 academic year. Moran will receive $20,000 toward his research on a manuscript about the Scopes anti-evolution trial. Moran’s manuscript, “The Scopes Trial and Popular Belief: Race, Religion and Science in the Trenches,” will examine the implications the trial had on science and religion in modern America. This year, 13 winners were chosen from a field of 164 applicants. For more information about the fellowships, contact Kathy Porsch at the Hall Center, 864-4798, or visit the Howard Foundation Web site, www.brown.edu/Divisions/Graduate_School/howard.

Dallas couple pledges $1M to law library
Law alumnus Douglas D. Wheat and his wife, Laura, have pledged $1 million to the KU Endowment Association to establish an endowed fund to support the school and, in particular, the library. In honor of the couple’s gift, the largest cash gift in the school’s history, the library will be named the Wheat Law Library. With more than 370,000 volumes, the Wheat Library is the largest law library in the state. The gift will allow the school to purchase many types of materials ranging from Kansas and U.S. legal history to emerging areas of the law, including the laws of cyberspace and technology.

Grants available for outreach programs
Several partnership grants again are available to support university outreach programs and conferences in fiscal year 2004. Anyone planning or hosting an academic conference, short course or seminar between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004, is encouraged to apply. Organizers of major events in subsequent years also may apply for funding now. The deadline for application receipt is May 16. Guidelines and details of event requirements may be obtained through Continuing Education by calling 864-4790, e-mailing mhunt@ku.edu or visiting www.kuce.org.

All three received a framed certificate and $250 in professional development funds. Kathy Davis, director of the Advisement Center at Southwest Missouri State University, gave the keynote address. The event was organized by the KU Advising Network and was sponsored by the provost’s office .

Volunteers sought for State Fair booth
The Office of University Relations is seeking volunteers to help with KU’s efforts at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson Sept. 5 through 14. Volunteers will greet passersby, answer questions and hand out university information. Each shift is four hours long. An orientation session for volunteers will take place in August. The drive to Hutchinson is about 3.5 hours each way, so KU will pay for motel accommodations and mileage. For more information, or to volunteer, please e-mail Ruth Hurst: rhurst@ku.edu. At the KU Medical Center, or the School of Medicine in Wichita, e-mail Sandra Colyer: scolyer@kumc.edu.
