Professors receive distinguished awards
Recipients are pictured below.
Seven KU faculty members will receive distinguished teaching awards for
the 2002-03 academic year during commencement ceremonies May 18.
Faculty from the KU Medical Center campuses in Kansas City and Wichita
will be honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Classroom
Teaching. This year’s winners are Linda M. Frazier, associate professor
of preventive medicine and public health; Michael J. Parmely, professor
of microbiology, molecular genetics and immunology; and Carol E. Smith,
professor in the School of Nursing.
Loraine M. Bayard De Volo, assistant professor of political science and
women’s studies, will receive the Silver Anniversary Award. The
25-year alumni class provides this award.
Ted Juhl, assistant professor of economics, has won the Byron T. Shutz
Award. Originally established in 1978 to honor distinguished teaching
in economics and business, the selection guidelines were modified in 1985
so that, in alternate years, an outstanding teacher from any discipline
can be honored.
Joey Sprague, associate professor of sociology, will receive the Archie
and Nancy Dykes Award, which honors faculty members or undergraduate teaching
and mentoring. Former Chancellor Dykes and his wife established the award
in 1990.
The Ned N. Fleming Trust Award for distinguished teaching, scholarship
and service will be awarded to Shane J. Lopez, assistant professor of
psychology and research in education.
