KU WWII veterans to be honored at Lied Center

About 500 Navy machinists were housed in the west wing of Strong Hall and marched from classes to the mess hall in the Kansas Union ballroom during WWII. University Archives, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, University of Kansas Libraries

As part of the Dole dedication, television broadcaster Bill Kurtis will moderate “KU Goes to War,” a public program honoring KU faculty, staff and alumni who served in the military during World War II, at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at the Lied Center.

Kurtis, a native Kansan and a 1962 KU journalism alumnus, will introduce about 40 WWII veterans seated onstage and moderate a discussion that will include Claudine “Scottie” Lingelbach, a 1944 KU alumna; John “Buck” Newsom, a former professor of naval science and commanding officer of the Navy ROTC; Richard L. Schiefelbusch, distinguished professor emeritus and director of the KU Institute for Life Span Studies; and Bill Tuttle, professor of American studies whose father served in World War II.

A booklet recognizing participating veterans will be distributed during the program. Excerpts of the booklet are reprinted here.
