The Kansas Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
officially renamed its most prestigious recognition, the KAHPERD Honor
Award, as the Wayne Osness Award, in honor
of the KU professor emeritus of health, sport and exercise sciences. Osness
also recently received the Luther Halsey Gulick Medal, the highest honor
given by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance, at a reception held in his honor.
Angela Lumpkin, dean of education and professor
of health, sport and exercise sciences, presented “From Bloomers
to the Digital Age — Reflections on the Remarkable History of Physical
Education in Higher Education” on April 23 as part of the Distinguished
Lecture Series at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
David Darwin, Deane E. Ackers distinguished
professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, was recognized
April 25 as a distinguished alumnus of the department of civil and environmental
engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Ed Martinko, courtesy professor of geography
and director of the Kansas Biological Survey; Jim Thorp, professor and
senior scientist at the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing program; and others
at the KBS recently learned that their proposal for research on watershed
classification will result in $1.2 million in funding from the Environmental
Protection Agency. Martinko also presented the 12th annual Kling Anderson
Lecture on May 7 at Kansas State University.
William Sharp, compliance specialist in contract
negotiations and research compliance, presented a session titled “From
Puritans to PIs: An Historical Overview of the Role of Research in American
Higher Education” on April 28 at the spring meeting of the National
Council of University Research Administrators, Region IV, in Cincinnati.
Bill Tsutsui, associate professor of history,
presented the lecture “Sunrise, Sunset: The Uncertain Future of
the Japanese Economy” at the Alaska World Affairs Council in Anchorage
and at the Juneau World Affairs Council the week of April 8. He also presented
“Resources and Environmental Policy in Japan” at the University
of Alaska-Anchorage.
