Staff tuition assistance program sees increase

The Department of Human Resources has announced that 130 KU employees have joined the student ranks this spring – a significant increase over last year’s tuition assistance recipients.

According to human resources, the increase is due in part to a change in the eligibility period, allowing staff to qualify after only six months of university service. In addition, many staff are choosing to pursue professional development opportunities in light of the university’s restructuring needs because of the state’s current budget deficit.

To obtain an application or for more information, visit www.ku.edu/~kuhr or call 864-7415. The deadline for summer semester assistance is 5 p.m. April 11.

To qualify for the tuition assistance program, classified and unclassified staff working 50 percent time or greater are eligible. The employee must have worked at KU for at least six months by the time classes begin, and classified staff must have completed their probationary period. A “C” average for undergraduates and a “B” average for graduates is required for continued participation.

To apply, employees must submit an application, a brief statement explaining how the course will benefit the employee and KU, and a letter of support from the supervisor. Applications are available online on HR’s Web page or may be picked up in 103 Carruth-O’Leary.
