Kemper Award seeks candidates

Nominations are being accepted for the eighth annual Kemper fellowships. Twenty $5,000 awards will be made to eligible faculty. Complete nominations are due in the Office of the Provost, 250 Strong Hall, by Friday, April 4. Nominations from previous years may be retrieved by the nominator from the provost’s office and updated for resubmission. Nominations left on file from previous years will not be automatically considered. For more information, contact the Center for Teaching Excellence at 864-4199.


Pulitzer Prize winner featured at seminar

First Amendment scholar, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, author and former New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis will be featured at the 16th annual Media and the Law Seminar on April 25 in Kansas City, Mo. The event is sponsored by KU and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Media Law Committee, with contributions from Media/Professional Insurance, the Kansas City Star and First Media Insurance Specialists Inc. Lied Center requests entries for artwork

The Friends of the Lied are seeking artwork for consideration as a gift to celebrate the performing arts center’s 10th anniversary. The group has budgeted $25,000 for one piece, which will be on permanent display in the Lied Center lobby. Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Friday, April 4. Regents to decide on fall break schedule

The Kansas Board of Regents will vote in March whether to approve schedule changes that will move fall break one week later to Oct. 23 through 26. Once approved, the schedule will include Band Day on Sept. 6, Open House and Family Weekend activities on Sept. 20 and Homecoming on Oct. 18.


Seminars to address issues in education, employment

The Policy Research Institute and Hall Center for the Humanities are presenting a seminar series about race, sex and ethnicity in education, training and careers. Sessions are from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Malott Room of the Kansas Union. The schedule includes sessions Feb. 27, March 13 and 27, and April 10 and 24. School of Education develops new program

The School of Education has established a Teacher in Residence initiative. The first participant will begin a one-year appointment in August. A selection committee will make the final selection after candidates visit campus late this spring. For more information, visit www.soe.ku.edu/teacher_in_residence.html.


School of Nursing wins health care grant

A grant totaling more than $800,000 will help the School of Nursing improve health care in Kansas by training health care providers. The project, called Health Education Training Center in Kansas, will coordinate interdisciplinary programs in conjunction with the Kansas Area Health Education Centers. The HETC project will provide support to six Kansas locations: Sterling Medical Center, the Birth and Women’s Health Center in Hutchinson, the Birth and Women’s Center in Topeka, KUMC family medicine, KUMC dietetics and nutrition department, and Healthy Options for Plain View in Wichita.


Oldfather Studios installs new system

Oldfather Studios has acquired a state-of-the-art editing system that will help attract and retain film students at KU. The Avid Media Composer 9000XL, which gives undergraduate and graduate students access to a professional-grade system for editing projects, arrived at the studio Nov. 15.


Mentor award nominations sought

Nominations for the Graduate and Professional Association’s Outstanding Mentor Awards are being accepted until March 14. Forms are available at the Graduate and Professional Association Web site, www.ku.edu/~gpa. The awards will be announced at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union.
