Google comes to KU

Starting in April, Google will be the official search engine of ku.edu. This change will make searches on www.ku.edu faster and more effective. Web administrator Julie Loats said the new search engine would re-index the ku.edu domain about every 48 hours. Loats said KU’s previous search engine, AltaVista, typically took two to six weeks to update the index, slowing access to new content posted by departments and offices.

ACS staff customized the Google results to be consistent with the look and feel of the official ku.edu design. The new search engine will continue to index official Web sites of KU departments, offices and organizations.

Digital Library calls for proposals

The KU Digital Library’s 2003 Internal Grants Program is under way. The Digital Library invites proposals to convert scholarly materials into networked digital collections. The competition is open to any faculty member or academic researcher who holds a full-time appointment at KU’s Lawrence or Edwards campuses. Last year’s Internal Grants Program resulted in $50,000 being awarded to fund six innovative projects. Preliminary proposals are due June 2. For more information, visit kudiglib.ku.edu/projects.

Instructional Support Program seeks student nominees

Academic Computing Services invites KU academic and administrative departments to nominate students for the Instructional Support Program. This program, now in its seventh year, provides paid training in computing and instructional technology for KU students, who then support department faculty in their use of technology.

For more information, including the kinds of skills the program teaches, visit www.ku.edu/acs/iss/. This site also allows for online nominations and provides a printable PDF version of the nomination form. Nominations are due May 16.

Contact Christine Muehe at cmuehe@ku.edu or 864-0465 for more information.
