Med Center prof advises talking to kids

Constant exposure to war coverage and discussion may confuse and even frighten children. Martha Barnard, clinical associate professor of behavioral pediatrics at KU School of Medicine, says it is important to talk to children about war.

Barnard says parents should allow children to express their fears through talking or, for younger children, drawing pictures. Barnard suggests the following strategies for parents and adults helping children cope with war: Communicate the child’s safety to him or her; help children understand what they are hearing or watching; allow them to play, including war games; try to limit exposure to news sources; find other things to do; don’t lecture on beliefs about war; and allow them to help or feel involved in projects.

In extreme cases, a child may suffer from a lack of appetite, trouble sleeping or aggressive behavior — all warning signs, Barnard says.

“If you think they are really struggling, seek help,” she says. “But in most cases, parents need to settle down and determine how to get their kids through it.”
