Regents approve fall break schedule


The Kansas Board of Regents voted in March to approve schedule changes that will move fall break one week later to Oct. 23 through 26. The new schedule includes Band Day on Sept. 6, Open House and Family Weekend activities on Sept. 20 and Homecoming on Oct. 18.


Ceremony planned for book contest winners


The winners of this year’s Snyder Book Collecting Contest will be honored in a public ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Oread Books on Level 2 of the Kansas Union. Stella Bentley, dean of libraries, will host the event. The finalists’ collections will be on display during the awards ceremony and reception. First- and second-place winners’ collections will be on display at Oread Books until May 9. The KU Libraries and Oread Books organize the contest. Online certificate program offered for nurse practitioners


The KU School of Nursing is offering a new online nurse practitioner post-master’s certificate program in psychiatric mental health nursing. The program consists of four online courses and three locally arranged practicum courses for a total of 13 credit hours. KU is one of only a few schools in the nation to offer the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner courses online. Former Johnson & Johnson executive to speak on ethics


Terence E. Downer, senior partner at the International Sounding Board LLC and former executive at Johnson & Johnson, will present “Working in an Ethically Driven Company — Johnson & Johnson” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Kansas Union ballroom. Downer is the guest speaker at the annual Walter S. Sutton Lecture Series, offered by the International Center for Ethics in Business at KU. The lecture is free and open to the public.


Nominations sought for distinguished librarian award


Nominations are being accepted for the Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Librarian Award, the highest award for a KU librarian. The award is given to a meritorious individual selected from the ranks of KU librarians. Last year’s recipient was William J. Crowe, Spencer librarian. Nomination forms are available from Libraries Administrative Office, Room 502 Watson Library, or by calling 864-3601. Nominations are due in the Library Administrative Office by 5 p.m. Friday, May 2. Hall Center announces Book Subvention Award


The Hall Center for the Humanities awarded the Vice Provost of Research and Public Service Subvention Award for the 2002-03 academic year to Sherry Fowler, assistant professor of Japanese art history. Fowler’s book, Rearranging Art and History at the Japanese Buddhist Temple of Muroji, will be published by the University of Hawaii Press. Robert Barnhill, president of the KU Center for Research and vice provost for research and public service, and Associate Vice Provost James Roberts created the Book Subvention Award five years ago. The award provides financial support to aid the publication of a manuscript based on humanistic research, written by a KU faculty member and accepted by a refereed press.
