At the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Austin, Texas, Linda Olafsen, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, presented a talk titled “Comparative Investigation of Optical Pumping Injection Cavity Lasers Using Variable Excitation.” Jeff Olafsen, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, gave a talk on work by students Jesse Atwell and Nick Shea on “Dynamics of Granular Gas of Non-Spherical Particles” and chaired a session of the meeting.


Mickey Imber, professor of teaching and leadership, published “The Value of Knowing” in the December issue of the American School Board Journal.


Jodi B. Simek, international outreach coordinator, presented two workshops on “Business: The International Language” at the Connecting Education and Employment Conference on Feb. 24 and 26 in Wichita.


The 48th annual Structural Engineering Conference, sponsored by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and KU Continuing Education, took place at the Kansas Union in March with more than 450 participants. Several faculty members from the School of Engineering and the department participated in the conference, including: Stan Rolfe, distinguished professor of civil engineering, was the conference chair; Stuart Bell, dean of engineering, gave the welcome; David Darwin, distinguished professor of civil engineering, presented “Status Report on Reinforcing Bar Corrosion Protection Systems”; and Steve McCabe, professor of civil engineering, presented a paper on the “NSF National Earthquake Program.”


Tom Huang, assistant professor of design, recently had his work in studio furniture selected to show in Worcester, Mass. The show, titled “The Chair,” featured work by international artists and chair makers. Each piece was selected by renowned chair maker and studio furniture artist Sam Maloof.


William Crowe, Spencer librarian, published “An Uncertain Trumpet: Developing Archival and Special Collections in the Electronic Era” in the 2002 volume of the Journal of Library Administration.


Joseph Harrington, associate professor of English, published Poetry and the Public: The Social Form of U.S. Modern Poetics through Wesleyan University Press last June.
