Shulenburger, Budig join national panel

The College Board has named KU Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost David E. Shulenburger to a new national advisory panel on teaching and learning writing.

Shulenburger, pictured below, joins 15 leaders, including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch, on the Commission on Writing in America’s Schools and Colleges. Former KU Chancellor Gene Budig also was named as an ex-officio member.

The commission is charged with defining and reaffirming the essential role of writing in education and making recommendations on how students, their families, schools, colleges and universities can improve the quality of writing in the United States. Commission members include leading college and university presidents, chancellors and provosts and school superintendents from across the nation. The commission will meet initially Sept. 30 in Chicago. A report may be issued by April.

“A key component of success in virtually any career today is the ability to write clearly and effectively,” said Shulenburger. “It is vital that schools at all levels require students to express themselves in an articulate manner.”
