Despite terrorism attacks and national recession, KU faculty, staff and students gave nearly $25,000 more than expected to the United Way campaign in 2001. KU contributions were $227,018.59, or 112 percent of the goal of $202,701. Under the dark cloud of the world events of this past fall, the KU United Way campaign was an inspiring and phenomenal success, said Stephen McAllister, dean of the School of Law and coordinator of this years KU campaign. We raised the most money ever from the KU community. That we did so while also providing relief funds for those directly affected by our national tragedy and in spite of an economic downturn once again makes me proud to be a Jayhawk. More than 700 members of the KU faculty and staff donated to the fund. The student-sponsored Rock Chalk Revue variety show last fall raised $50,000, surpassing its fund-raising goal by more than $15,000. KU employees can contribute to the United Way through payroll deductions and can designate contributions for specific agencies. Some of the 29 local human service agencies that receive money from the United Way include Hospice Care, Van Go Mobile Arts and the countys AIDS Project. The United Way of Douglas County and the local agencies it funds are very appreciative of the generosity of KU employees and students, said Judy Billings, county campaign drive chair. |
