Public hearing to invite feedback on
parking policies

The university community will have an opportunity to share input on the Parking Department’s policies, rules and fees at a public hearing at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the hearing, which will be led by the newly formed Parking Commission. The commission consists of 10 members, including faculty, staff and students, as well as seven ex-officio, non-voting members.

Allen Ford, professor of business and chair of the commission, said that a task force implemented changes last year, including the formation of the commission and the creation of the public hearing. The Parking Commission replaces the Parking Board.

“I think the task force that worked on this really put some effort into the project,” Ford said. “I think they did a good job.”

The public hearing is scheduled to be an annual event.

“It will give ample opportunity for members of the university community — including faculty, staff and students — to have input,” Ford said.

Another development is the way information will be reported to administration.

In the past, the Parking Board would report to SenEx and University Council, which would then go to the chancellor. Now the Parking Commission reports directly to the provost, who then goes to the chancellor.

“That’s a major change in the structure,” Ford said. “I think it’s going to be more efficient.”

Parking Commission members are: Allen Ford, chair, business; Reva Friedman-Nimz, associate professor of teaching and leadership; Joe Evans, professor of electrical engineering; Lynn George, human resources; Beverly Nightingale, comptroller’s office; Eric Jeppesen, environment, health and safety; John Augusto, graduate school; Kyle Johnson, student; Shanika McPhaull, student; Mike Appleby, Student Senate Transportation Board. Ex-officio members are: Theresa Klinkenberg, university director; James Long, assistant provost; Lindy Eakin, associate provost; James Modig, director, Design and Construction Management; Ralph Oliver, director, Office of Public Safety; Don Kearns, director, Parking Services; and Jeremiah Jones, chief justice, Court of Parking Appeals.
