Vol. 26, No. 7
Jeanette Stauffer, mother of Shannon Martin, and the Rev. Thad Holcombe, campus pastor for Ecumenical Christian Ministries, dedicated a tree and a plaque in Martin’s memory Nov. 1 outside the ECM building, 1204 Oread, north of the KU campus. Martin, a 23-year-old from Topeka, had finished course work for a degree with honors in biodiversity, ecology and evolutionary biology when she was murdered May 13 during a brief research trip to Golfito, Costa Rica. Sunrise Garden Center of Lawrence donated the tree — an Indian Magic crab apple — for the memorial. Martin was employed by the garden center.
