When Art Hadley first began designing a Web site for the Audio-Reader Network, he had never even been on the Internet. At the time, I had never seen a Web page and had no idea what they looked like. Hadley, producer and engineer for Audio-Reader and webmaster for the organizations site, said one of the biggest challenges was figuring out what needed to be included on the site. Audio-Reader, a radio reading service for anyone who has difficulty reading standard printed material, utilizes volunteers who read daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and books. Some of the radio broadcasts are made available for on-demand listening on Telephone Reader, the dial-up newspaper service, and a few are accessible via the Web. Audio-Readers Web site provides a repository of information about its services and offers listeners the ability to hear live broadcasts. In the future, Hadley said he hoped the site would offer listeners increased access to previous shows. If you miss an hour of a mystery, you might want to catch up, he said. About one-third of Audio-Readers programming is currently available on the dial-up phone system, and the improved system will extend services to include all shows from the previous week. At any moment, you should be able to dial up and hear any program that aired in the last week, Hadley said. |
