Faculty honored for distinguished teaching

Eight KU faculty members will be honored as recipients of distinguished teaching awards for 2000 during commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. May 20.

The teachers will be among the faculty seated on the platform during the commencement ceremony. They also will be honored at the Alumni Association All-University Supper at 7 p.m. May 18 at the Adams Alumni Center.

The Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching is given to faculty members of the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. and Wichita. This year’s winners are Norton J. Greenberger, professor of internal medicine; Karen Wambach, clinical assistant professor of nursing; and Robert R. Wittler, associate professor of pediatrics.

Two faculty members, Paul Atchley, assistant professor of psychology, and Mark Joslyn, assistant professor of political science, have received H. Bernard Fink awards for outstanding classroom teaching. H. Bernard and Ruth Fink of Topeka established the award in 1961.

John Gauch, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, received the Archie and Nancy Dykes Award. The award honors faculty members for undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

Former KU Chancellor Archie Dykes and his wife, Nancy, established the award in 1990. Their gift was matched by the Whitman Corp. Foundation, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

Christopher Allen, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, is the recipient of the Ned N. Fleming Trust Award for distinguished teaching, scholarship and service.

Ruth Ann Atchley, assistant professor of psychology, received the Silver Anniversary Award. This award is provided by the 25-year alumni class.
