Transition to ku.edu set to begin

The two-year transition from ukans.edu to ku.edu — KU’s new Internet domain — will officially begin March 5 with the launch of a domain transition Web site at www.ku.edu/computing/domain.

At the site, users will find step-by-step instructions on how to change their e-mail addresses and Web sites to reflect the university’s new online identity.

“All KU computer users and their technical support staff should visit the site to make sure they understand if — and how — they are affected,” said Cathy Smith, assistant vice chancellor for information services. “Most people can adjust their online services in just a few minutes.

“Although the transition to ku.edu is scheduled to be completed within two years, people can use the site to change their services right away.”

The domain name change will have one immediate effect on March 5.

Users accessing secure Web pages with ukans.edu addresses — such as Outlook Web access at https://www.mail.ukans.edu/exchange/logon.asp — will receive a security message.

While users can choose to continue and securely visit the page, the message will continue to appear until the address is changed from ukans.edu to ku.edu.

To avoid the security message, users should update their browser favorites or bookmarks with ku.edu addresses. Links to secure sites should be changed in personal and departmental Web sites as well.

However, for convenience, the most frequently used KU secure site, WebMail, will continue to be accessible as https://webmail.ukans.edu and https://webmail.ku.edu until the end of the spring 2001 semester.

The domain transition Web site also includes a utility that finds and updates subscriptions to internal KU e-mail lists with the new ku.edu e-mail address. The utility can also be used to update subscriptions to many external lists, and Academic Computing Services staff can assist individuals in changing other external mailing list subscriptions.

Exchange distribution lists will be automatically and continuously updated as will the administrative lists used for mailing to all students or employees.

ACS Help Center staff are available at (785) 864-0200 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to assist individuals with the transition. Questions may also be addressed to question@ku.edu.

KU employees may also call the ACS consulting line at (785) 864-0410 during weekday business hours.

Web site managers can receive assistance from the ACS Web Team by contacting Brett Stoppel at 864-0462 or bstoppel@ku.edu. Departmental system administrators who need assistance with DNS issues should contact Craig Paul at cpaul@ku.edu.

System administrators can address questions regarding other server reconfiguration issues to Bill Loats, 864-0406, wal@ku.edu. Owners of Listproc mailing lists may also contact Loats for assistance.
