Newspaper management to change hands
Malcolm Gibson, assistant professor of journalism, will become general manager of the University Daily Kansan on Dec. 22, succeeding Tom Eblen. Gibsons appointment is for one year. Gibson said that as general manager he will advise the student staff of The Kansan on how to keep stories student centered and how to gain readership. Gibson also said he hopes to take the Kansan to a broader audience with converged media.
The 21st century is a multimedia environment, Gibson said. The Kansan should take a leadership role and be an example for not only every student newspaper but every newspaper. Thats our long-term goal.
Gibson said he accepted the position because he respects students involved in campus media and because he likes the newspaper environment.
Ive spent most of my life in newspapers, and I loved every minute of it, Gibson said.
After Gibsons term, the journalism school will conduct a nationwide search for the next general manager. Eblen has been general manager and news adviser to the Kansan for 15 years. He was Gannett Foundation Professional in Residence in the School of Journalism from 1979 to 1980. A reception in his honor will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.
