Anyone looking to make his or her community a better place need not look further than the Community Toolbox.

The Toolbox, created by the KU Work Group in 1995, is a Web site that provides general information on health promotion and community development. One of the Web site’s developers, Jerry Schultz, said the site is not just for a small group of people.

“The Toolbox is for everyone from grass roots organizations to non-profit organizations. There are skills they need to be successful. We try to provide information on those skills.”

Some of the key points on the Web site include how to write letters or lead a meeting. There are also sections devoted to teen pregnancy and neighborhood safety, as well as many other topics of interest to those advocating for community improvement.

Valerie Renault, public information officer for the KU Work Group and writer for the Web site, said the information is constantly updated. Even with 5,000 pages and 200 sections, the site is easy to understand and navigate, which was important to the site’s creators.

A new feature of the Toolbox is a question box. Visitors to the site can e-mail any questions they may have and a Toolbox writer will provide specific answers.
