Repeat policy not retroactive

University officials are reminding returning students not to plan on repeating any courses this fall semester they have previously taken and failed.

A new university policy allowing qualifying students to retake a course that they earned a D or F in goes into effect this fall. However, the policy does not apply to any classes taken before this fall semester. Students can start retaking classes in the spring 2002 semester.

“The policy allows students who are relatively new to KU the opportunity to improve their grade-point average by retaking a course in which they did poorly,” said University Registrar Richard C. Morrell.

The new policy gives qualified students the opportunity to repeat up to five classes and have the new grade used for GPA calculations. The old grade would remain on the student’s permanent transcripts but would not be counted in the GPA.

To qualify to retake a course, students must be seeking a baccalaureate degree, take the original class in their first 60 hours at KU or in the first 60 hours they transferred to KU, and receive a grade of D or F.

Notices about the policy will be placed on campus bulletin boards and on the university Web site. Students who have enrolled in a fall semester class, intending to repeat it for a better grade, should consider dropping that class and adding another one. Students are encouraged to seek KU academic advising on this matter.

For more information, a guide and the actual policy are posted at www.registrar.ku.edu/repeat.
