Equal Opportunity directorship to change hands

Maurice Bryan, director of Equal Opportunity, has left the office to pursue his doctoral degree in American studies at KU.

During his eight years as director, Bryan said he had tried to change the office’s approach. The changes Bryan emphasized included working cooperatively with others, approaching issues as partners; recognizing staff, both in terms of skills and diversity; and streamlining the search process.

“I think I’ve played a role in reducing the sense of intimidation or alienation that sometimes accompanies this office,” he said. “People feel we are more accessible, I think.”

Danielle Dempsey-Swopes has been appointed interim director. She said she wanted the office to continue to be a key resource in recruiting and diversity issues.

“I’m looking forward to working with the campus community on a greater scale,” she said. “I’ve had an opportunity to work with many people as associate director, and I think that will be further enhanced in my position as interim director.”

Dempsey-Swopes has worked as associate director of Equal Opportunity for five years. She previously worked as director of classified affirmative action at K-State, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary social science.

She also earned a juris doctorate from Washburn University.
