Kathy Pribbenow, Outlook training specialist, and Thelma Simons, Exchange project coordinator, presented a paper on the KU Exchange project titled "Promoting Change and Collaboration at the University of Kansas" at the 4th World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics and 6th International Conference on Information Systems Analysis and Synthesis in Orlando, Fla.

Jerry Niebaum, assistant vice chancellor for information services, has been selected as one of two inaugural winners of the EDUCAUSE Award for Leadership in the Profession. The award carries a $2,000 scholarship in his name to an institutional fund of his choice. The award will be announced at EDUCAUSE 2000, Oct. 10 to 13 in Nashville, Tenn.

Anita Herzfeld, associate professor of Latin American studies, presented "Un nuevo despertar de la identidad de los hablantes del criollo limonense" at the 50th International Congress of Americanists July 10 to 14 at the University of Warsaw in Poland. In August she delivered a paper titled "Male Talk in Limonese Creole" at the 13th Biennial Conference of the Society for Caribbean Linguistics at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. Martin-Luther University in Halle, Wittemberg, Germany, recently published Herzfeld's "La etnicidad en un contexto de bilinguismo: los criollos ingleses en Centro America hispanohablante" in a CD titled "America Latina: cruce de culturas y sociedades. La dimension historica y la globalizacion futura." Herzfeld was recently elected treasurer of the Central American Interest Section of the Latin American Studies Association. Herzfeld also collaborated with Hiroto Ueda, a professor with the Latin American Studies Center at the University of Tokyo, on "Variacion lexica del español en el mundo." It was published in Varilex 8-2000.

Karin I. Pagel Meiners, assistant professor of Germanic languages and literatures, received an Everett Helm Visiting Fellowship at the Lilly Library at Indiana University. The summer grant supported her work on gender and class issues in 18th century German cookbooks.

Marilyn S. Clark, reference librarian emerita, recently published "The Community of Italian Building Masons in Prague, 1535-1720," in Mediterranean Studies, Vol. 8 (1999), the journal of the Mediterranean Studies Association. It originated as a paper in May 1998 in Lisbon.
